What does the funny little word “hygge” mean? Have you ever found yourself surrounded by this warm feeling that makes you feel like curling up in a ball with a warm beverage and blankets? Imagine being in a quaint coffee shop with a fireplace crackling in the corner, comfy couches and chairs draped with knit blankets and pillows, and twinkling white lights surrounding the burning candles on the mantle. Maybe there is a scent of freshly baked goods wafting in the air. This sense of coziness and warmth is called hygge. It is a Dutch word that is pronounced “hoo-gah” and essentially means feeling cozy. A hygge vibe elicits the feeling of being warm and content – surrounded by things that create a warm, cozy atmosphere. When I came across this term on Pinterest, I became obsessed with this new to me concept. I love feeling warm and cozy, so I decided I needed to incorporate more hygge into my life. I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to all things hygge. Check it out here!

We can all do things to infuse some hygge into our lives. You can even do just a couple of small things in your home to create a space that is all about gratitude, warmth, simplicity – even if it’s just a room or a corner of a room. Here are some simple ideas that won’t break the bank!
Add lights to your space. Warm lights can make a big difference when transforming a space into your hygge haven. These battery-powered fairy lights from Amazon will give you a great start. If you have mason jars or vases, these are the perfect vessels for fairy lights and will add warmth to any space.

Add candles to give any space a hygge ambience. They can be real candles or flameless like these from Amazon. Scented candles can add a cozy vibe too! Check out these Maine made candles over at Maine Scents the Cinnamon Kitchen scent – so homey!

Wrap up in a super soft, luxurious knit blanket like this one! Nothing channels that snuggly, content feeling like a soft blanket. This one comes in multiple colors and sizes to suit your style.

Sit down with a warm beverage using your favorite coffee mug (or buy a new one like this. just for hygge moments.) If you’re a coffee drinker, brew a hot cup of delicious, organic mushroom coffee and use a milk frother for some added comfort and nutrition. If you’re a tea drinker, a warm, spicy chai tea is a must. No matter what your hot beverage is, you can really upgrade the cozy with a handknit coffee cozy. Check these out from my Etsy shop!

People LOVE a tabletop Zen garden. I have one in my office at work and students and coworkers love to come in and play in it. This is mutually beneficial. What I mean by that is people benefit from playing in the Zen garden, and I benefit from watching and listening to the sand (ever heard of ASMR?) It’s very relaxing!

Artfully display some books in your space. It creates a sense of relaxation. There’s nothing like a good book to help you achieve your optimal level of relaxation and contentment. Go to the library and pick out a book to read, or borrow one from a friend! If you love to read, you could even join the Book of the Month club to get new books every month. You can choose your book each month – if you don’t like the choices, you can skip a month. Super convenient. I just started this and am very excited to get my first book in the mail soon. When I’m not knitting, rest assured I’ll be reading. Even the Louis Vuitton store in NYC knows how to create hygge with books!

I have really enjoyed sharing hygge with you! These are just a few ideas, and I know I’ll be back with more. I’m always thinking about how to add a little hygge to my life to reduce stress and add contentment. Here is one small spot in my home that makes me feel cozy. I hope that you’ve been inspired to add some hygge to your life. Happy hygge ❤️
